8/24/2026

You asked, we responded.
Here are some of our most frequently asked candle magic questions, answered.

Question: As the oldest operating witchcraft store in NYC, how do I use one of your hand-carved candle spells?

The motto at our shop is “We give you the tools, but only you can make the magic.” Yes, our spell candles are powerful and charged and hand-carved and crafted with specific alchemical recipes. The real magic, as well, comes with your specific intention for your spell. So what does that mean exactly?

You work a spell for a specific intention, right? And that requires your unique energy, focus, and an intentional magical purpose. Each spell candle is hand-crafted – even down to the incense used at the bottom of the glass and the oils rubbed onto the carvings — for a general magical and spiritual intention, but it requires you to charge it and give it spark.

We generally recommend the following with any 7-day candle spell:
  • Take a sea salt ritual bath. If you don’t have a bath, no problem! Use sea salt as a scrub. You also don’t have to buy the seat salt scrub from us, you can use what you have in your own kitchen or apothecary, too. The point is, cleanse yourself first before beginning any spell. More tips on that can be found here (for free!)

  • Light the candle with intention. Intention means different things to different folks and we accommodate alotta Crafts around here, so it’s truly subjective to every spellcaster. If you’re starting out or simply want more guidance in your existing practice, try the following:

  • Focus on your highest intention for the spell. If your brain has a zillion things going on and you can’t narrow it down (no judgment, we’ve all been there), try writing down one single line on a piece of paper to help narrow the focus for your spell. Speak that one line or image into the flame as you light the candle.
  • Some folks like to raise their energy or “charge” the energy of the candle while it’s burning. Again, that looks different for every magical practitioner. It might mean dancing, it might mean chanting, it might mean listening to music, it might mean doing your own ritual from your practice, it might mean sitting in focused silence, or filling the room with a certain vibe/energy.
  • Even if you do none of the above – and simply light the candle and let it burn — the spell is still put into the universe/spiritual realm. They’re intention-based candle spells. You’ve already ordered, bought, and personalized one from us. So once you light it, the universe knows! You know! And if you want to get more specific or intentional with it, we encourage you to do so – since magic really is individual and intentional.
  • Let the candle burn for seven days or until it's completly burned out. Put it out when you're not at home and obviously be smart about fire. Some witches put their candles in the sink and bathtub when they're not around. Some keep the candle in a water glass. But make sure you finish burning the candle completely, no matter how long it takes. Don't leave it unfinished. It's your intention and spell, so see it out to it's end.
  • While the candle is burning all those other days, refocus your intention on your spell. Cast your energy and focus into the flame. Be specific. Be expansive. Be receptive to what comes. Take note of images and signs and subtleties in your life. Lastly (and no one likes to hear this), but be careful what you wish for (hence the specificity). When you get exactly what you asked for, give thanks and acknowledge receipt of your blessings (to the Universe). Acknowledge the blessings and also dispose of your candle spell in a eco-friendly way.

Blessed be, witches x
